ModBus TCP: Real benefits for Electrical control

Factory automation networks can be a blur of different technologies. Which ones find a home in your factory can have huge implications on how much your systems cost and how well they work. Modbus TCP is one of these technologies and holds some real benefits for automation networking.

To understand the benefits of Modbus TCP, first we need to understand what Modbus TCP is. Modbus TCP has two “layers” to it. The first of these layers is a logical layer. The logical layer is the method in which Modbus TCP sends its data. This method is called the TCP protocol. TCP protocol is part of the robust foundations of the internet, and is used to send websites from one side of the world to the other. The TCP protocol holds information about where the information is supposed to go, and who it’s from. The TCP protocol also carries with it information from the equipment that sent it. This could be input or output information from a PLC or an I/O block. Because Modbus TCP is an open protocol, it makes it easy for controls engineers to pull out the data to integrate into the control systems. It also means that there is more openness when choosing a software program to control the machines, allowing for cost effective solutions to be used.

The physical layer of Modbus TCP also allows for cost effective solutions. Because Modbus TCP uses the same logical layer as the internet, it can also use the same equipment as the internet. This means any router or switch currently in use can be connected to a Modbus TCP module. They can use the same style of Ethernet cable, and communicate across the exact same lines that your computer will use for email and internet. Because this equipment is widely used, it is also fairly inexpensive and has a low learning curve for existing staff.

Modbus TCP devices come with a variety of uses. Modbus hosts devices such as AC/DC Motor drives, flow meters, valve drivers, remote I/O and many more. With these Modbus TCP devices you can build the system you need all with the same network. ROSS controls is one company offering Modbus TCP for valve drivers, which also integrates remote I/O as a part of the same package. This makes it even easier to wire your systems with just a single communications wire to control both your valves and I/O.

Modbus TCP is a simple and inexpensive industrial automation protocol offering a wide array of options. With its ease of use, openness and robustness, it will help make your industrial automation a lot smoother, and a lot easier to use.
